info4990477

Easy circular walks from 1 to 4.5 miles

Here are  a selection of easy circular walks for you to enjoy discovering the variety and beauty that Dartmoor National Park has to offer.

Bellever Forest -Distance 3 miles

This  tranquil setting offers a route along the forestry tracks with stunning views across open moorland. The terrain is mostly surfaced forestry tracks with some steep rocky sections. You can take a diversion on this route for a more exhilarating walk up to Bellver Tor. On this walk you may see some of the popular wild Dartmoor ponies.  There is parking at the forest.

Burrator Arboretum and Nature Reserve - Distance 1 mile

Meander through woodlands and meadows and listen to the rippling Narrator Brook. Enjoy the wildlife in the Burrator Arboretum. One of the Arboretums primary functions is to provide access to reservoir visitors who may find it more difficult to explore other areas of the site. The terrain is compacted aggregate footpaths and boardwalk, only a slight gradient in one place.

Carving a Trail - Distance 4.5 miles

For a reasonably active walk Carving trail is easy to follow from the start point of The Carpenters Arms Ilsington. The terrain of this walk takes you down green lanes, through undulating fields and woodland, with several ascents and descents, some steep.  Explore how rivers have cut deeply into softer slates and shales.

War Horse Walk - Distance 3.4 miles

Starting at the Royal Oak at Meavy this  easy circular walk is straightforward in good weather over open rough country. The skill of map reading and using a compass is necessary,  as this walk is mainly an unmarked route and the fog can descend without warning.

What our Guests Say

"Highly recommend!"

"Just back from a week in the beautiful Lydgate cottage attached to the hotel, set in a stunningly beautiful, a very peaceful location. The cottage is lovely has everything you need.  John, Sarah and Kelly are very friendly, helpful and around if you need them, without being intrusive. You can order from the hotel's menu and have dinner delivered to the cottage, which was a real treat! The perfect base for exploring Dartmoor and further afield there's loads to do within 45 minutes to an hour's drive. Highly recommend!"
